See More TransformationsWhat is balayage?
Balayage is a French word that means ‘to sweep.’ It’s our most popular colouring technique and for good reason. Balayage involves hand-painting colour onto sections of hair to create a natural, sun-kissed effect that adds depth and dimension, creating a versatile and timeless look that suits a wide range of hair types, lengths and face shapes.
This popular technique is designed to grow out gracefully with less noticeable regrowth compared to other methods. Unlike traditional highlights, this option doesn’t require frequent salon visits for touch-ups. Perfect for clients who cannot visit the salon regularly. Over time, as the shades become closer to your natural colour, they will gradually lighten.

Meet The Experts
Our team brings decades of skill, artistry, and innovation to the craft of hair colour, expertise that sets us apart as London’s leading destination for flawless, natural results.
DiscoverHow balayage is applied
Our experts begin the balayage process with an in-depth consultation. During this discussion, we assess the client’s hair texture, natural hair colour, and desired outcome. This step is crucial in determining where and how the balayage ‘sections’ should be placed and intensified to ensure a customised result that complements the client’s individual features and style while ensuring the health of your natural hair is prioritised.
Following the consultation, our unique free-hand balayage technique is applied. The first step is to strategically select sections of the hair to be lightened. This is usually around the face and along the ends, where light naturally illuminates hair. In order to achieve a seamless transition, the colour is painted onto the hair in a sweeping motion, starting at mid-lengths to the ends and gently blended into the roots to ensure a natural re-growth.

Balayage
We recommend Balayage to clients looking for a low-maintenance natural-looking hair colour technique for the following reasons:
- Root Growth Blending: With balayage, the colour is applied to allow a gradual transition from your natural hair colour to the highlighted or coloured sections. As your hair grows, there won’t be a stark contrast between your roots and the rest of your hair, resulting in a less noticeable regrowth compared to other methods.
- Less Frequent Touch-Ups: Unlike traditional foiling or highlighting methods that require touch-ups every four-six weeks, balayage can go much longer without needing a refresh. You can typically wait eight-twelve weeks or longer between salon visits.
- Soft and Natural Look: Balayage creates a softer, more natural look than a uniform, all-over colour. This natural effect means that even as the colour gradually lightens over time or as your hair grows, it still looks intentional.
- Minimal Bleaching: Balayage requires less bleaching than traditional full-head highlights. Since the bleach is strategically applied, it reduces the need for frequent conditioning treatments.
Highlights
We recommend Highlights to clients looking for maximum brightness and a precise, consistent colour result for the following reasons:
-
Root-to-Tip Brightness: Unlike balayage, which often keeps a natural root, highlights allow colour to be applied right up to the scalp. This creates maximum brightness from the very top of the hair, perfect for those who want to feel significantly lighter or blonder overall.
-
Maximum Lift: By encasing the hair in foils, heat is trapped, allowing the lightener to lift the hair to a cleaner, brighter shade than open-air techniques. This makes highlights the ideal choice for clients with darker hair who want to achieve a cool, creamy blonde.
-
Precision & Consistency: Foil highlights offer a controlled and structured finish. Whether you opt for ultra-fine ‘babylights’ for a subtle blend or a classic weave for dimension, the result is a uniform colour distribution that integrates perfectly with your natural hair.
Face Framing
We recommend a Face Frame to clients looking for a high-impact change with minimal commitment for the following reasons:
-
The Ultimate Refresh: This is the perfect service to maintain your look between larger appointments. By concentrating colour solely around the hairline, you achieve the feeling of freshly highlighted hair without processing your entire head. It reconnects the brightness to the root where it matters most, making your overall colour look brand new.
-
Low Commitment & Cost: Because the colour is focused on a small, specific section, it is a quick and budget-friendly service. It allows you to experiment with a bolder, brighter look at the front while leaving the rest of your hair natural, significantly reducing overall maintenance.
-
Contouring Effect: Just like makeup, a face frame can be customised to contour your face shape. Your colourist can adjust the placement and thickness of the highlights to frame your features perfectly, adding dimension exactly where it has the most visual impact.

@beautyclublondonFrequently Asked Questions
How do I maintain my Balayage?
Wait before washing: Wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair after highlights. This allows the colour to set properly.
Shampoo and Conditioner: Invest in a high-quality, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner designed for colour-treated hair. These products help preserve colour and prevent fading. We will recommend shampoos and conditioners suitable for your hair type during your consultation.
Reduce Washing Frequency: Wash your hair 2-3 times a week at most. Frequent washing can strip away colour and natural oils.
Protect Your Hair From Chlorine: Chlorine strips colour from your hair. Wear a swimming cap or pre-wet your hair and apply a conditioner before swimming in chlorinated pools.
Following these aftercare tips will help ensure the health of your natural hair, extend the duration of your highlights, and reduce the need for frequent touch-ups.
Is Balayage suitable for all hair types?
Yes, balayage can be customised to suit all hair types and colours, whether you have dark, light, curly, or straight hair. The technique can be adjusted to create a variety of looks from soft and subtle to bold and dramatic.
What's the difference between Balayage and Highlights?
With balayage, hair is painted freehand instead of using closed foils, offering a more customised look than traditional highlighting methods. Those seeking effortless and natural-looking hair colour transformations often choose this method because it is versatile and allows for different shades and dimensions. In addition to its low-maintenance appeal, balayage minimises noticeable regrowth lines compared to traditional highlighting techniques.
Highlights lighten hair sections in a variety of ways, from subtle, natural-looking shades to dramatic, high-contrast colours. Highlights are particularly popular for adding a uniform lightening effect to hair without changing the base colour.
Can I have Balayage if I have grey hair?
Yes. The Balayage technique can be effectively adapted for grey hair by combining it with a permanent root tint. This allows for 100% grey coverage at the root while still achieving the soft, multi-dimensional look of Balayage through the mid-lengths and ends. It offers the best of both worlds: complete coverage where needed, with a modern, youthful finish throughout.
How often do I need to touch up my Balayage?
One of the biggest benefits of Balayage is its longevity. Unlike traditional foil highlights, which can show a distinct line of regrowth after 6–8 weeks, Balayage is hand-painted to create a soft, diffused root. This allows for a natural-looking grow out, meaning most clients only need a full refresh every 3 to 6 months.
How long does a Balayage take to apply?
It typically takes 45 minutes to 3 hours to complete a balayage, including the application of colour, processing time, washing, treatment, and styling.
Since the technique is applied by hand and no two balayages are the same, the amount of time can significantly differ from client to client. Longer and thicker hair will need more time.
Does Balayage damage hair?
No, balayage is considered a more hair-friendly alternative to traditional hair colouring methods. This innovative technique stands out because it targets specific sections of the hair rather than applying dye to the entire strand from root to tip. One of the key benefits of balayage is its ability to minimise hair damage. This is largely due to the technique’s gentle application process, which avoids the harsh saturation commonly associated with conventional dyeing methods.
However, the overall health and integrity of your hair post-colouring significantly depend on the expertise of the hairstylist. A skilled and experienced colourist is crucial in ensuring that the balayage technique is performed correctly, eliminating the risk of damage and achieving the desired outcome. It’s essential to choose a stylist who specialises in balayage and has a proven track record of delivering excellent results.
How much does a Balayage cost?
Our balayage prices are tiered based on the experience level of the hair colourist you choose. Prices start from £250 with a Stylist and £350 with a Director.
